WEd/Thurs April 15/16
Yesterday we left Meteora after a wonderful breakfast with the extended family that owns the Guesthouse & the best Taverna in Kastraki (picture below) & traveled south through a beautiful valley with fields surrounding us. We arrived in Dephi in the early afternoon & had a delicious lunch (see pic) before heading to the Sanctuary of Apollo located half a mile from our hotel. This is where the Oracle of Delphi was located. It's a beautiful setting--the result of Zeus releasing 2 eagles from each end of the Earth to locate its center. Delphi is where the 2 eagles met. It's so peaceful & amazing to see the ruins. It's ALOT of stairs from entrance to stadium at the top! It's just amazing to see these places that are 2500 years old. Who knows what will remain of our culture. This morning we left Delphi for Olympia--leaving central Greece for the Pelopenese peninsula. What a spectacular drive along the Gulf of Corinth! We stopped in tiny Galaxidi, right on the water, for fried sardines & a beer. Then, continued along the turquoise waters, crossed the Gulf of Cornith on a spectacular bridge & arrived in Olympia. (Bill says I'm using spectacular too much--I can't help it!,) This is the site of the Olympic Games. Pretty impressive. You can still see the marble starting line with deep grooves for the feet. These sites are so peaceful. The archeological museum pieces together all the original pieces found & shows what it looked like--unbelievable! Wow! We got to our 6-room guesthouse up in the hills above Olympia around 7pm & just finished a delicious meal of chard, feta & tomatoes, fried local cheese & melt-in-your-mouth slow cooked lamb. We don't want to leave ! The stars are gorgeous. P.s. The bed in Delphi was perfect & tonight, almost perfect. More to follow . . .
